I received a Antworks Ant Farm as a gift for Christmas 2007. I took it to work and it was an instant hit. Here is one of the two Time Lapse films that we took one day while we worked.

  • do you have to feed them daily or do they just eat the gel

  • They eat the gel... according to the box, it has added nutrients in it.

  • do you think it would work if i took a queen in it?

and how do i do a Time lapse? xP would`nt it take a great number of batteries on the cam or? xD sorry for stupid question but please answer ^^

  • Like I said I am not an etemologist, I just followed the instructions and the ants lived about 4 months (which from my Wikipedia research is their normal lifespan). As far as time lapse, I use Linux and a Mac so I could not tell you what you can do in XP. The time lapse was made using my camera, then just an import accomplished the video. Look at your camera for time lapse settings.

  • how can you find a queen ant? do the ants just decide like ''oh shes pretty she should be our queen! all hail the queen!''

  • People there is no Queen the queen is much bigger than the size of these ants. Queens are not for sale because if they breed they give birth to hunreds of thousands of babies and the government does'nt want an ant infestation because of a loose queen!

  • Hey this is cool! If you double the size of the farm, then capture a queen (not that hard btw) they will make chambers and leave eggs in them, and store food! Needs MOAR SPACE!

  • @kozmon0t It might depend on what part of the country you're in too. In Iowa we got the fat black carpentar ants and little brown sugar ants. I was in S. Carolina once where they got crazy big cowants and tiny fireants. I guess I should've rephrased that they are rare to find for me, but then again I spend all day in my bedroom. lol

  • hello just set up my ant farm but all the ants are just staying in the corner and not digging are they on strike or have i done something wrong they have only been in there 24 hours so far.

    cheers richie

  • @marilyn007manson1 They're not all that rare, they just look like impossibly big ants that appear out of nowhere. Usually they've already shed their wings when you see them.

One time I caught a carpenter queen and put her in an ant farm, she dug a little tunnel and laid some eggs, but she died and they never hatched

  • @marilyn007manson1 Cool! Lol thx :)

  • @Chris0151Mc From what I hear, this gel is made by Nasa. I imagine it's probably hard to recreate. You can order it though online. Just google "Ant farms" and it shouldn't be hard to find.

  • @emogalinkheart No, that's not how it works lol. Queen Ants are rare to find. From what I remember, I think all Queen ants are born and bred around the same time. I believe it's early spring or late fall. They are huge and have wings, they fly to find a spot to create an ant family and once they find a spot to burrown, they leave their wings behind and start laying eggs of their own. I did a report on Ants back in grade school but that was 20 years ago.

  • @AlexandMann I recently killed an ant queen in my room. What would the government care if I let that queen produce eggs in an ant farm, or let it free to produce eggs somewhere else? Are you talking about the USA government or another country?

  • @chopaksnes Most camera's have an inlet/outlet where you can plug them in instead of using batteries. You can usualy get these cords at any electronic stores like Radio Shack. Just plug one end into the camera and the other end into the outlet.

  • i have one of these and im sorry but i might just copy your idea......maybe
