The Shan State in North-eastern Burma is horribly oppressed under the violent Myanmar military junta. In reaction, the Shan people have formed the SSA, or Shan State Army to defend themselves against some truly despicable acts. This hour long documentary charts the history and plight of a wonderful Shan people and culture. I highly recommend watching this all the way through.
I cannot take credit for this work as I am not the filmmaker who created this. I am unsure who to credit since this was copied off of a VCD I brought back from the border area of Northern Thailand. Please excuse the digital glitches, this seems to have been passed thorough many iterations before being uploaded.

  • I would prefer Shans to become part of Thailand/Laos rather than become half chinese, controlled by chinese merchants, military advisers, drug lords, etc. The Wa and Kokang armies are a good example of this.

  • I think the best strategy for the Shans/Tai people in Burma is to join their brothers in Thailand and Laos (the languages are quite similar) and form a big new country to be called Siam. I don't know whether the Laotians and the Thais would really support that idea. One minor problem is hat there are other minorities that live in Shan state (Wa's, Palaungs, Pa-O's etc.)

    Good luck

  • Good luck to All my brothers and sisters!!!!

  • as a thai person, i would be honored that the shan state and the tais to be a loving part of us, but I am not sure if our brother, Tais, would like the idea.

  • I think this video would be more effective (if aimed towards a western audience) without this musical backing. The music makes the video seem less serious than it is, like a corny action movie.

  • Burmese conquered them along time ago... so they shud stay this way

  • Why should Shan Sawbwas rule over other minorities like Palaung, Pa-O, Wa, Akha, etc.? There is always some hypocrisy about minority rights because being a minority is a relative idea. There are many mixed marriages in Burma, especially with Chinese. Ne Win (Shu Maung) was half chinese as well as Thein Sein. The last king of Burma, Thibaw is of Shan ancestry. I think the real problem in Burma is that because of hs silly ethnic skirmishes (amongst brothers) Burma is becoming a Chinese colony.

  • The Shan only want Shan State which used to be autonomous (ruled by Shan princes). The Pang Long conference said Shan State could become independent after 10 years when Burma became independent from Britain. The Burmese junta stopped this from happening. It might help if the world gave the Shan some support. If the Burmese junta stuck to the Pang Long agreement, there would be no fighting.

  • Keep it up general! We are praying for you and our troops.
