The "singing voice" is called "chanteur/chantrice" (cantor).
The church in France didn't know singing parishes like in Germany or other countries. The old tradition is: Grand-Orgue plays Entrée, Offertoire, Communion, Sortie; Orgue-de-Choeur is accompagnying (?) the choir; the parish is only hearing/praying. They don't have singing books, only handwritten short melodies (Notre Dame, Paris).
Since about 1990, in a few parishes, the chanteurs are trying to bring the parish to sing.
This organ is to mind mind one of the finest in the world. It has a very interesting story and the accoustics are just superb..A shame though that there are so few cd-recordings of it. I do have a few of them but a recording from one of the masses would have been a revelation. If I had the oppurtunity I would move to Paris just for the sake of attending masses at Sacre Coeur.
I especially like the sound of the pedal-reeds - which are acoustically enhanced by high domed architecture of Sacre Couer. I often wish to relocate to Paris. Perhaps I will.
1899 Cavaille Coll originally built for the chateau of Baron Albert L'Espee if I'm not correct, modified by Mutin and reinstalled in Sacre Couer in 1917 if I'm not mistaken. The acoustics in Sacre Couer are nothing short of awesome. Would love to visit someday.
