I wonder how many people commenting here use a spray for their own teeth or clean tartar off their teeth with a sharp metal object ( a screwdriver? really?). Obviously people do need to be informed that pets need to see a professional to have their teeth cleaned. Teeth are teeth people. Dog, cat, human they all need the same care
Oh and for the record that spray you see commercials for contains essential oils which have been proven to be TOXIC and cause liver and kidney damage.

My Doberman lets me scrape the hard tarter off his teeth. I use one of those metal curved dental picks and that crap chips right off like magic. i can do his whole mouth in about 20 minutes, that includes a good brushing after the tarter removal.
If you dont have one of these tools you can purchase at your local drug store for a few dollars.
If your dog is neurotic and it doesn't trust you and/or you don't trust it then you will get bit...don't do this.

Dentastix used daily for about two weeks took 99% of the tartar off my dog's teeth. It's about 50 cents a day for the large ones.

It is actually quite easy, you just have to get your pet used to touching its mouth over the course of a few weeks. I use a small flat head screwdriver to scale it off. Once you get one tinypiece off, the rest of the tartar covering the tooth just flakes off easily.
