The Reverend Dr. James Cleveland (December 5, 1931 - February 9, 1991) was a gospel singer, arranger, composer and, most significantly, the driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound, bringing the stylistic daring of hard gospel and jazz and pop music influences to arrangements for mass choirs
James Cleveland was the first gospel artist ever to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Rev. Cleveland was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Trinity Bible College.
David and Delores Winans, matriarch and patriarch of the famous Winans family, met while in the Lucille Lemon Choir, conducted by James Cleveland.
Aretha Franklin was among the many people who learned from James Cleveland.
Cleveland's voice was sampled and reworked for the gospel song "One Sunday Morning" by Tonéx.
He and his choir appear on the song "Where's the Shoorah?" from Elton John's 1976 album Blue Moves.
His choir, the Southern California Community Choir, appears in the movie The Blues Brothers, as the choir backing James Brown (a.k.a. Rev. Cleophus James, the Triple Rock Baptist Church preacher), in a gospel called "The Old Landmark" (1980).
JAMES CLEAVELAND - should have a movie about him. Lifting him high. And the humanity along with it. It tells a story. That even during a time of social unrest and ethical misbehaving according to scripture as we knew it at that time, a brother can be very useful for the merits divinely given by God.

I want get into his sexuality, but he was indeed a music icon. I am a quartet fan. I love his material, and practically every church, choir, praise team and quartet to this day sing his material. 'Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus' has to be the Gospel song of the century and one of probably top five ever written.

@cjzzzz: You are absolutely right.....many so-called Christians want to ignore the fact that James turned out a lot of young men. He was a flamming homo and he caused a lot of young men to go astray because of his spiritual illness of homosexuality. Phony people will say we have no right to judge him....but really he judged himself by living a lie in GOD's name. His GMWSA was a homosexual haven. Some of yall wanna prop him up above the word of GOD. Last i checked homosexuality is an abomination.

WHY CHRISTIANS SO HELL BENT ON DEFENDING SIN THESE DAYS????
cjzzzzz 1 year ago
As far as the comments on this video, James Cleveland owes us nothing. His judge and ultimate responsibility is to Christ ALONE. As far as this video, why is the choir in jail behind him?
