Maguwoharjo stadium has been becoming a temporary shelter for about 36.000 of displaced persons due to Merapi eruption. While many of the refugees have returned to their villages, thousands of them are still staying at Maguwoharjo.
Initiated by DERU (Disaster Response Unit) UGM and SENTANA (Seniman Tanggap Bencana), a cultural event FOR and FROM refugees entitled "Spirit of Life" was held on Friday, November 19, 2010. The objectives were to bring a new paradigm about trauma-healing process and to transfer positive energy among the refugees.
Prior to the D-Day, some performances had been practicing some dances and other performances such as children's Choir, Gamelan orchestra, Ketoprak, poem-reciting, etc. At the end of this event, a group of children recited a prayer to God for the sake and safety of all refugees in Yogyakarta and Central Java. Other refugees together with some volunteers, policemen, and soldiers also involved on this event by lighting up dozen of flying lampions which symbolized their gratitude to all the people of Indonesia.
