Pervez Musharraf Resignation Speech (August 18, 2008 - 1pm) - COMPLETE with ENGLISH subtitles (Part 1/10)

Prior to speech, there was media speculation either way and it was not clear for much of the speech what he would say.
Masterful management of secrecy of the outcome.
Nail-biting speech revealed Musharraf's decision at the very end.

Musharraf had two choices:
1) challenge the impeachment (hard to make stick)
2) resign to avoid a prolonged process - since the incompetent government would have trouble prosecuting (they had not even revealed charges, or defined the process for impeachment)

In my opinion he was less of a problem for the incompetents as President. Now he will be freer to criticize them. I predict he will join or start a political party (most probably with Sheikh Rasheed and others).

  • i don't know why but i like musharraf way better than zardari...

    musharraf was like our bush..

    they were infamous,

but they were EXTREMELY good at running their country.

but i miss pakistan AND musharraf ):

  • Musharraf was liked in Pakistan prior to the "civil society" movement against him. Read the blog at top-right for background - search for "Mossadeg" on that blog.

Bush is another story altogether. He was a midget among leaders.

Musharraf stands out on his own among world leaders. He was dealt very difficult situation and he tried to tread the middle path to keep the U.S. at bay WHILE retaining links to China etc.

Also read the blog for why he was removed.

  • quote: One day you'll understand that true stability does not come from the gun of a dictator

Problem we don't have "one day".

What you say is admirable and probably correct - but what do you do in the 20 years before competent leadership emerges ?

Someone has to guarantee that free media becomes operational, that that generation of leaders get the education they deserve. And that it is local bodies (NOT legislators) who are doling out "development funds".

  • That is, you need someone "transformational". Transforming the people from sheep into thinking humans.

That schools work, that universities get funding.

That not a few media, but tens of media channels are started (so it is harder to monopolize). Although they SHOULD have prohibited joint ownership of newspaper and TV (as happens elsewhere - but perhaps in Pakistan print media was anemic anyway so maybe it is less relevant).

  • That the media criticizes the President, so that others are ALSO criticized.

Sure you can base everything on the Afghan/U.S./Pakistan equation. But is that the extent of your interest in Pakistan ?
