Imran Siddiqui , Urdu VOA News, Guantanamo, Cuba.
...........On Jan 22, 2009 President Obama signed an executive order stating that Guantanamo Bay Prison would be shut down but 2 years later, critics argue, it does not seem like a possibility in the near future. The detention centers at Guantanamo present a contentious debate;some say that shutting it down is a bad idea as no other country is coming forward to accept the remaining detainees while others say that it is the only detention facility in the world that offers Habeas rights to enemy combatants. Activists are pushing forward the issue of human rights and argue that the future of human dignity is at stake if Gtmo continues to detain individuals without allowing them the presumption of "innocent until proven guilty" or hearings at federal courts. Such arguments will continue for the foreseeable future as there is no official finality to Guantanamo bay detention camps. Last year Imran Siddiqui visited Guantanamo Bay naval base and detention facility and covered the proceedings of Omar Khadr's case by the first military tribunal set up under the Obama Administration. Now, on the 9th anniversary of Gtmo's detention camps, and coincidently, at the end of Omar Khadr trials, he brings you, Gtmo... 9 years and still counting...
