25 Hot Movies You Have to See This Summer

MAY

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1)

Any chance to see Hugh Jackman in the role that made him a star is a welcome treat!

Star Trek (May 8)

The buzz surrounding this reboot is deafening! Director J.J. Abrams will satisfy hard-to-please die-hard Trekkies.

Angels & Demons (May 15)

The scene-stealing but cringe-inducing hairdo sported by Tom Hanks in The Da Vinci Code is gone! Its now safe to watch the sequel.

Terminator Salvation (May 21)

Sadly, this fourth Terminator movie is going to be overshadowed by Christian Bales (John Connor) on-set tirade.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (May 22)

The first movie was cute, lets hope that the sequel is better.

Drag Me to Hell (May 29)

Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise) returns to his Evil Dead roots with this horror flick. The scenes I saw at last years Comic Con were enough to recommend this flick.

Up (May 29)

By now, we know that the Disney and Pixar collaboration can never go wrong. Up is the first animated film to kick-off the Cannes International Film Festival.

JUNE

The Hangover (June 5)

This comic mystery from Old School director Todd Phillips will cure your, dare I say it, hangover.

Land of the Lost (June 5)

This is a treat for those who grew up with the Sid & Marty Krofft TV show. I saw a sneak peek of the film and yes, the Sleestaks are back to harass Will Ferrell and company.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (June 12)

Tony Scott, director of this remake of the 1974 film, promises a bigger film with a better storyline. Plus, the always-dependable Denzel Washington is co-starring with John Travolta and The Sopranos James Gandolfini.

The Proposal (June 19)

Sandra Bullock returns to what she does best romantic-comedy.

Year One (June 19)

Jack Black and Michael Cera prove Stone Age can be fun in this Judd Apatow-produced comedy.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June 24)

Theres more than meets the eye in this sequel to the 2007 hit Transformers. Bigger robots, bigger explosions, bigger box-office take!

JULY

Public Enemies (July 1)

Johnny Depp (John Dillinger) and Christian Bale (Melvin Purvis) duke it out for director Michael Manns Public Enemies. I know its a summer film, but this has Oscars written all over it.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (July 1)

Manny the Mammoth Guy (voiced by Ray Romano) and his pals return for this third installment. But dont worry Scrat fans. Your favorite saber-toothed squirrel also makes an appearance.

Bruno (July 10)

Sacha Baron Cohen is hell bent on upsetting more folks with another docu-comedy based on his HBO special, The Ali G Show. This time, well get to meet Bruno, the gay fashionista from Austria.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 15)

The fifth installment of the Harry Potter franchise is the most heartbreaking of the series. Potter and friends will witness the death of one of their own.

(500) Days of Summer (July 17)

Trust me when I say, this Sundance darling will steal your hearts!

Funny People (July 31)

Judd Apatow returns to direct (he hasnt directed a film since Knocked Up) this bittersweet comedy about stand up comedians.

AUGUST

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (August 7)

Another movie based on a cartoon series thats based on a toy. Heck, I enjoyed Transformers so Ill give this one a shot.

The Time Travelers Wife (August 14)

Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana play time-crossed lovers in this big-screen adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's bestseller. Prepare to cry and swoon at the same time!

Taking Woodstock (August 14)

Ang Lee, one of my favorite directors of all time, returns with a quasi-comedy about Woodstock based on Elliot Tibers book.

Ponyo (August 14)

The great Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki (Spirted Away) promises to enthrall us once again with this mind-bending fantasy.

Julie & Julia (August 17)

The reigning queen of summer blockbusters, Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia!), channels culinary icon Julia Child in this dramedy based on Julie Powells book.

Inglourious Basterds (August 21)

Another one of my favorite directors, Quentin Tarantino, returns to ignite the screen in Inglourious Basterds (no, this is not a typo, the title is intentionally misspelled). Brad Pitts performance as Lt. Aldo Raine is already being talked about.
