IAS workshop "Towards a cure: HIV reservoirs and strategies to control them"
16&17 July 2010 - University of Vienna, Austria
16 July, 16:30-18:15
Session 2 - What are the Mechanisms of Persistence?
Chair
Monsef Benkirane, France
Both cellular and anatomical reservoirs have been identified in patients under Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy (HAART). The persistence of these HIV reservoirs seriously challenges the hope of complete viral eradication by HAART. To better tackle the problem of virus reactivation and subsequent eradication by HAART, many laboratories around the world have focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the establishment and maintenance of HIV-1 latency and in the transcriptional reactivation from latency as well as on identification of the anatomical reservoirs. This session will give an update on basic research, to discuss how these findings can be translated into potential therapeutic strategies and to explore new ideas for the future.
