Truck spills load of crabs in Brewer

BREWER, Maine - A pile of live crabs was served up to residents Saturday morning when the truck carrying them spilled the crustaceans across North Main Street, Sgt. Rich Smith said Tuesday.

An estimated 8,000 live rock crabs from Virginia were dumped on Bridge Hill in Brewer, located at the junction of North Main and Center streets, at around 11:30 a.m.

"Hundreds of people there were getting free crabs," Smith said.

The tractor-trailer, operated by Warren Transportation of New Brunswick, was on its way home from Virginia when the incident occurred.

The truck was carrying about 412 individual plastic containers of crabs, each weighing approximately 80 pounds. When the crabs had been loaded, about 3 feet was left empty in the back that was supposed to be filled with spacers. Without the spacers, the unsecured load slammed against the back doors as the truck attempted to drive up Bridge Hill, releasing the crabs.

"[Around] 100 of the crates fell out," Smith said.

The driver told residents that anything that fell from the big rig would be considered waste and that they could take it.

The estimated value of the crabs that fell onto the roadway is "at least $30,000," Smith said, adding that he's not sure whether the remainder of the load would be considered waste since the ice in the refrigerated truck had melted.
