A segment from Michael Moore's TV Nation (1994) in which Mike takes note of the fact that Cobb County, Georgia, home to outspoken "big government" critic Newt Gingrich, is the third largest receiver of federal funds. The show then tries to relieve Cobb County of government interference by closing its federally funded highways, schools, sewer system, and senior center.

This video is not meant to infringe on any copyrights, but to share this amazing show of Moore's with those who didn't catch it the first time around on television, especially as TV Nation has not been made commercially available to purchase.

  • Michael was Stephen Colbert before Stephen was...

No better way than this vid, to expose the scam of "cut taxes / cut govt". It's amazing how these morons fall for it over & over...

  • Thumbs up if you came here after watching Mike on the Lawrence O'Donnell show!

  • Grinch was in favor of school lunches - so the poor kids would have energy to work the mops and brooms after school.

  • “You're landlocked here”

This was highly regarded in the UK but if I remember rightly Michael Moore wasn't a big name in the US when TV Nation and the Awful Truth was made (a few years before the cable boom).

As a consequences a lot of names didn't recognise Moore and this made him a real pioneer with some great access. Serious issues done with great humour and the shorter length made them more effective than his more well known films.

  • Way to go MIKE! So clever!

  • Three people are from Cobb County.

  • @Writerdust average US tax rates are at a 20-year low. Taxes like capital gains are at historic lows. The US takes less in tax and spends less on welfare, per capita, than just about ever other OECD country. Despite these low tax rates, CEO pay is soaring and workers are being laid off. 'Tax cuts' is a mantra that is chanted by the Right for every problem. The problem isn't that taxes are too high. Far from it.

  • @raxist Thumbs up if Michael Moore sent you here.

    (I gave a thumbs up)

  • TV nation was a hidden gem that hardly anybody watched. If Comedy Central had been a factor then, then, TV Nation would have been as popular and enduring as the Colbert Report and the Daily Show.

  • What this biased film doesn't address is why do these politicians have so much money to spend on earmarks? Why? Taxation. We are over taxed. There is just too much of our hard earned money in the government hands. So do as some fiscal Republican's hawks are at least trying to do and that is to reduce the size of government and they want to do it by reducing the heavy level of taxation. By reducing the amount the government can get it's hands on then earmarks will have to by attrition reduced.

  • I'm not a fan of Michael Moore, but with Newt making waves for the presidency and still on a platform of fiscal conservatism, I hope this broadcast from 17 years ago is remembered!

  • Michael is amazing! 1989 with "Roger and Me" and now I discover (thanks koalafrog for posting) Michael's "Newt And Mike Save America." I just wrote my column today on Newt: The rolly-polly-inside-the-beltway-piggy-greedy-politician and something called 9-9-9. ronald tee johnson dot com
