All dinosaurs have been lit and rendered with Bakery Relight, and composited with live action footage. Relight has also been used for lookdev on every shot, and to style the fur and feathers on the dinos.
Models have been exported from Maya using the Bakery plugin, with additional Python tools using Relight's API. Relight's flexibility enabled the studio to render large scenes with crowds very efficiently, due to indexed delayed load into animation cycles. On the render side, they used environment lighting based on HDRI, deep shadow maps, soft shadow maps and ambient occlusion. EXR was used as the output container for render layers. The render times per frame varied from 5 to 30 min/frame depends of the complexity. Relight's render command was installed on approx. 50 multicore render nodes and the queue was controlled by Python scripts and Windows HPC.
