"It's great that we have President Barack Hussein Obama as the first black, African-American President of the United States of America, but I didn't have to someone beyond my own dad," West said. "When you look at the black family structure right now, less than 33 percent have mother and father in the home. Once upon a time in the black community you didn't have to look at people outside your home for role models. We've have got to get that re-established so we don't have to look up to Washington D.C. You can look at your dads."

@dean2663 that's a fair criticism, but speaking in terms of the black family (which they are), I think it is more than appropriate for West to make the point that he made considering something like 70% of black children are raised by single parents. That number is way too high and it's for reasons other than what you described. That's what he was getting at with those comments.

@chdet22 Yes, but you can't force a couple to stay together. Marriages are going to fail for many reasons, parents die, etc. Parents and children should not be made to feel inferior in single parent households and sometimes need help. I think it was arrogant of West to say "look at me and my father" and not also point out the successful people from broken homes. Many children have no parents due to 911 and parents that died in Iraq and Afganistan. One size does not fit all.
