At least one gallon for one betta. Two or three gallons is even better.
Or are you asking how big a gallon is?

I HAVE ONE EXACTALY LIKE THAT IF U WANT TO LOOK AT HIM GO TO My betta fish:Mango.

@LibisFish It doesn't take a rich person to properly care for their pets; it takes a responsible person. If you can't afford properly sized housing, buying the animal in the first place defies logic.
I am not an "elitist;" I am just a person who does not believe in animal abuse; but it's okay, you are entitled to your ignorance. Too bad your fish have to suffer from it.
-
@drgnfrc13 You know what bud? Our fish are doing fine. And we aren't rich like you seem to be. So deal with it. They get the very best that we have, and much better than most people would do for them. You are an elitist. I'm not replying to you further.

Not to mention that these Wal-Mart fish had a much better chance at life in my humble pickle jars than they would have with most of the people bringing them home. At the time the "throw them in a jar with a plant and don't feed them" fad was big. Everywhere I looked people had starving fish. I did the best I could with what I had (guess what, I'm poor as dirt) and the fish were happy.
-
@drgnfrc13 Yeah, they didn't just survive, they got better. Their rotted fins (being from Wal-Mart) grew back and gained color, they became more enthusiastic in their behavior, etc.
-
@LibisFish And as for the ryukin, a 20 gallon isn't much of an improvement, considering the metabolism of goldfish. I would never keep even the short bodied varieties in anything less than a 40 gallon breeder; 55 gallons for the more elongated breeds (orandas, comets, commons, certain fantails, etc.).
-
@LibisFish Wow, where to begin... First of all; again, just because they survive does not mean they are in good conditions. Bettas are hardy, I agree, but that doesn't mean they should be kept in the worst conditions you can possibly give them without immediately killing them or encouraging disease. Regarding the show breeders, it is common for breeders to keep their fish in the absolute minimum conditions, this doesn't surprise me (many cichlid breeders do the same).
-
@drgnfrc13 Also, I always felt that they cell systems were a way to spread disease too quickly through the fishroom and did not allow each fish enough room to exercise.
-
@drgnfrc13 Which is why our ryukin (will grow to be far smaller than a comet) has 20 gal to himself. I never had problems with fin rot or other filth-related diseases. Several of my Wal-Mart bettas that I felt sorry for and brought home were sick when I got them and grew healthier with time--which suggests good husbandry. By the way, the majority of show betta breeders keep them in similar conditions to what I kept my fish in. A few also have large systems of "cells" for the fish.

@LibisFish Or I guess you could set up a DIY sump larger than the tank itself and fill it up with plants, but that would be a rather eccentric setup.
mine does the SAME THING! hes in a large jar and i will draw on the outside of his jar and he's completly MESMIRIZED by the expo marker! hes really curious about it. i drew him a castle and he'll peak out through the door i drew. its really cute to watch. hes a happy betta :D
