it has nothing to do with paranoia. it's an independent horror story about one particular family, inspired by one particular family in real life, with whom the writer-director has had run-ins with in the past, not least surrounding the release of this movie. It's an excellently made and written piece of work, designed to do nothing more than entertain and unsettle. It's a cool little story, which fulfilled all its potential. You are just confused.

how kind of you not to offer me a retort. I'll save it, nonetheless.

Out of respect for Kevin Smith - "KS" - of course :)

No offense - but I consider this "web 2.0" review pretty "kindergarten".
The only point it really made (besides the mentioning of the surely good/great acting performances): The movie is completely unpredictable and "designed to frustrate the audience" - mission achieved, I surely didn't miss that.
But even if I exclude the "serious background subject" aspect - the script/production/direction didn't amaze me either.
Since we made our points - it's obviously about taste - let's stop :)
Cheers

I disagree with your NY Times reviewer, and you. I do believe you have both missed the point entirely. Without wanting to come across as a parrot, or subject for appealing to others' opinions to corroborate my stance (which I'm not, btw) - see /watch?v=1_pM9aGmxvI&list=PL5E394269304E0CCD&index=6 for a pretty accurate take on the movie, with which I wholeheartedly concur. I'd only write exactly what this video has already said.

The New York Times review is pretty on point in my opinion.
nyti DOT ms/15phNWZ
"But for all its boisterous profanity and splattery violence, the film is more of a weary sigh than a sputtering volley of indignation."
"(...) I do wish he had found a more cogent, less chaotic way of expressing it."
"The problem is that the movie Mr. Smith has made is, for the most part, a loud and unconvincing vehicle for this view, swerving between horror and satire without being quite sharp or scary enough."

..."rotten".
Although I am not a film school graduate - or an action flick expert per se - I am still confident to say, this movie just isn't that well made - judging it only by the execution of the genre's elements.
To sum it up: As a complete package - I think it more or less missed the point and/or went the wrong direction - and for an isolated, action-focused movie, it's just not that entertaining and remotely well made.
I just expected more from KJ (considering the topic of the movie).

With "certain people" (which might sound pretty pejorative - not my general intention though) I meant... - hard to (clearly) explain in detail given the character limit here - ... surely not agnostic Mensa members for example (which again, might sound pretty cocky).
My main objection is: The chosen genre (Horror/Thriller and mainly dull Action) just does not "fit" a topic as serious as this. A movie about prevailing religious fanatism - with the focus on "action elements" is just...
