Just finished my Grade 10 RCM exam and this is my fifth repertoire piece - Shostakovich's Three Fantastic Dances Op. 5 from the 20th - 21st Century Repertoire - List "E". Only the two studies remain to be uploaded. Phew!
This was a preparatory public concert where I played all of my 7 pieces in front of a rather large audience. The concert proceeded without any breaks between repertoire and with no applause either (until the end). It was emulating 'exam conditions.' You can already view List "A", "B" (two movements, recorded separately) List "C" and List "D" already on YouTube.
This is a piece that really grew on me. It's dissonant, and yet it's not.
There are three separate Fantastic Dances each separated by only a few moments.

  • Sizzling and playful at the same time.

  • Shostakovich was very much underrated in classical musical circles. His music - always under tight Soviet control - is technically demanding as well as wonderfully creative. He wrote these Three Fantasic dances when he was 16 or so.

  • My grade 10 exam is in June and I'm playing almost all the same pieces as you. I really enjoyed your playing and will use them as reference in my own playing. Good Job!

  • When you play etude tableaux op 33 no 8 do you use the pedal for the really fast part? I'm learning the song and I like how you played it. (sorry I'm asking here but I figured you'd check this vid faster cause it's more recent)

  • Well-done; I really enjoyed that performance.

  • Nicely done. I didn't know this piece at all and it was really quite interesting - and nice.

  • What imaginative pieces and playing! The last dance was actually quite funny (musically)! Excellent playing and interpretation to the music.

  • Really enjoyed your performance of Three Fantastic Dances (and the rest of your recital too)... It's my first time listening to this piece, I really like it!
