Great cellist Pablo Casals plays the Spanish Dance, which was originally written for piano. This recording was made during 1916 and 1920.
The twelve Spanish Dances, Op.37, were composed in 1890, and initially published in four sets of three dances each. These early works, inspired by the Spanish national school of Felipe Pedrell, were one of Granados' first successes as a composer, and have become one of his most popular piano works, second only to the masterly Goyescas.

The 12 Spanish Dances have been transcribed for guitar as well as for orchestra, and are more often heard on the guitar than on the piano, especially the famous 5th dance, Andaluza (sometimes named Playera), which is one of the most performed Spanish classical pieces.

  • The master Pau Casals would have never wanted his first name to be changed for Paul, Paolo or Pablo. Why to say; Paul Casals, Paolo Casals, or Pablo Casals, intead of his real name: " PAU CASALS "

A respect is required for the Master, Pau Casals. If you respect the music, and his play, please, respect as well his Name.

  • I look up to pablo or Pau Casals and Yo Yo Ma because they are wonderful cellist and the best of their time. I also am a young cellist and I learned this recently. I share the same the birth date as Pau Casals. Coincidentall, I think not. I will work hard and become a great cellist!

  • @Free4Catalonia Senor Casals will sent in a angry e-mail later.

  • Embora o disco seja antigo e muito danificado isso não tira o mérito deste grande músico. Obrigado, Fernando.

  • This is ridiculous. I think he would've cared more that you appreciated his music than that you knew his "real name". Just listen,

  • @imanarwhaleee in dreams begin responsibilities.. Good luck for all humanity and peas

  • To anyone who enjoys this recording as much as I do, I believe that this version has been sped up unnecessarily. The only other recordings that I can find online put the total time at around 3:40, and while I can't confirm that Casals didn't make other recordings of the Danza Espanola comparing the intonation between the two versions makes me suspect that the original is slower. Feel free to compare for yourself!

  • Free4Catalonia, you must be a bloody bastard
