I've had 4 knee surgeries in the past 18 months, i have really bad patellar chondromalacia in my left knee. i've had osteotomies, open medial plication, lateral relase, plica excision, micro fracture, medial reefing, chondroplasties, and more. it keeps getting worse and i'm only 17. i'm having another athroscopy in a few weeks to harvest the cartilage cells, then i'm having my entire patella cleaned up and there going to sow on the periosteum patch and inject the cells underneath it.
i had it done at thornbury hospital in sheffield, had to be done privatley as its only done on the nhs in london and edinburgh (sp) and as i live in derby they are too far away. The rehab is monstrously hard however it varies, ive ha it on both knees and they have both behaved differently, also as i have had both knees done in 9 months my rehab is very different. Both my physio and my surgeon have never had any one my age or have any one have it done so close together on both knees worth it though
well i have had this problem with my knee for 5 years and im only 18!!! and it was just getting worse so i needed it to get sorted before i had to have a knee replacement.
i have a cartilage problem in my ankle, the problem is that my second op which involved drilling holes in the bone worked quite well, so i am able to run about 40 mins a week, but i am no where near 100%. I worry that having the aci op may make it worse, as the technique in the ankle is still relatively new. I think i will wait a few more years and hope my ankle holds up. I dream for the day i can run for an hour with no problems or worries. btw i wish you all the best on your recovery mate.
im pretty much 6 months after my second aci main op, recover for this has been very slow mainly due to protecting both knees,
I had a arthroscopy last week cos of pain and lots of grating but the surgeon predicted before that there was probably a cartalige tear and he also thought the graft site probably needed tidying.
he was correct nay way and i literally felt better the same day,
should be running around march time back for around may june.
