  • This is an endoscopic exam showing a horse with laryngeal hemiplegia. Basically, the muscles controlling the left arytenoid (flapper) are paralyzed.

  • If you look on the left hand side (of the horse, right hand side of your screen) you'll see the wall is folding inwards, restricting air flow to and from the horse.

    This is due to a compromised nerve (recurrent laryngeal nerve), meaning that the muscle that holds that flap up normally (cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle) has no nerve signal to make it contract - hence, the flap is loose and floppy (for lack of a better lay-description).

    I hope that explains what's going on in more depth. :)
