  • Thank you soooo much, I am teaching Americans about India, specifically Chennai/Tamizh/Caste etc and it came sooo handy!

Btw THIS India DOES EXIST, not in the cities though....

But I am so nostalgic looking at the women, they are Divine, no hint or trace of vulgarity..this is about the Kalakshetra/Dance parts..such beauty/grace, no wonder Malle was so mesmerised!!

  • Glad you liked it krsn. Please see if you can get hold of the whole film (all six hours of it) these short clips only hint at the greatness of the work that really should be seen in its entirety

  • This is amazing.. I was in that town madras at that time.i.e.1968. I was 10 year old and I was very much in that place called Mylapore. Can you please write to me. ? I want to see the whole movie..I can share it with my brothers and sisters who still remember those days?

    Thanks..

    Ravi-UK

  • Hi Ravi, the whole film is available from Criterion, have a look on Amazon,

I had to buy it as part of a boxed set but it might be available on its own now. The documentary is over six hours long and Malle has captured an India that no longer exists, this honestly is one of the most astonishing pieces of film making i have ever seen.

ps drop me a line if you cant get hold of it and i'll see if i can help

see all

  • Though I dont agree with many comments and opinions or even visuals made in this film...which is clearly shallow and exhibits typical condescending mentality of europeans on Indian culture, I have to say that finally, in this segment of the Video, Louis seems to getting the point of india. It is nothing but oneness among variables
