Amazons of Rome (1962) starring Sylvia Syms, Louis Jourdan, Nicole Courcel and Ettore Manni. Directed by Vittorio Cottafavi and Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia.

Amazons of Rome is an absurdist Peplum comedy with a decidedly French flair when it comes to its views about war, politics and the battle of the sexes. It's very light and colorful, sorta like "Gidget goes to War" but it has a farcical view of all things political and the differences between men and women that elevates it from a silly teenage comedy. Famous French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier said that this was one of his favorite films of all time. He obviously got a kick on how the film makes fun of war and politics and probably had an eye on Nicole Courcel who plays the "villainess" in a very regal manner.

This film has many qualities, including the cinematography which is one of the best looking Peplums I've ever seen. Make sure to watch the clips in High Quality. The production values are excellent and the cast is unusually strong, with the exception of Louis Jourdan playing a Barbarian. He's too much of a gentlemen to play a Barbarian. Sylvia Syms is cute and Ettore Manni, with the eye patch, steals the show whenever he's on screen.

Though the film's director is credited as Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, it was also co-directed by the brilliant Vittorio Cottafavi, who directed some of the best S&S films.

The original Italian title "Le Vergini di Roma" translates to The Virgins of Rome.
