Woody Guthrie was a great artist and a great and courageous American. He lived through the Great Depression and was a “dustbowl refugee” himself, on the road like thousands of others, looking desperately for work to support his family. Those experiences inspired his music and he spoke through his songs for the struggling families who suffered most during those hard times. His music is truly American music and it will endure and always be a part of the American story.

Muleskinner Blues was written by Jimmie Rogers in 1930. You can hear the original version on YouTube sung by Jimmie Rodgers himself and the word in the second line is clearly son not shine.

The first verse of the song is similar to Tom Dickson's (a black man) 1928 recording "Labor Blues" in which the exchange is clearly between a white boss and an African-American worker who is quitting the job, not applying for it. The worker rebels and quits because he is not being paid.
