Ray Davies interview and Kinks soundcheck- Denver 9-9-81 Part 1

Ray Davies of The Kinks was interviewed by my friend who was a producer at a local TV affiliate on 9/9/81 in Denver, CO at McNichols Arena. Kinks management was surprised Ray wanted to do an interview, as it wasn't his usual practice. I went along cos I was/am a big fan and got to ask a few questions. Ray was witty, informative and talked about current things, like the newly shipped Give the People What They Want, as well as his historic past. Chrissie Hynde, his lover at the time, was at the soundboard, never filmed. The Pretenders were opening act. Part 2 finishes the interview and starts the soundcheck.

Thanks for posting. I can't remember seeing Ray so chatty and unguarded. And I don't think I've ever heard the "bad radio frequency" part of the knitting needle story.

I just handed the interview to him last Saturday after his GREAT show. I told him it was one of the best interviews he's ever given. He seemed interested, especially since that was from the only show where The Pretenders opened for The Kinks! So some romantic history as well- kind of my Postcard From Denver! The amazing part of this, looking back, is that even his management didn't know why he wanted to do an interview. And it was nice that some real fans got involved.

Yes, and Dave kept right on playing! Even Ian was getting anxious, but we showed up during their soundcheck when Ray was at the board with Chrissie, and he jumped down, smiling, saying "Hi, I'm Ray!" As if we didn't know!
