-1-
First I will explain the origin of no spin throwing.
I started researching Japanese Shuriken in 1998 or 1999.
I collected information about European and American throwing Knives and Asian throwing tools.
However, only Japan had a systemized method of no spin throwing, that has appeared throughout its history.
Though it is unclear how the art developed, there is no doubt it has existed in Japan for hundreds of years.

-2-
There were methods of throwing tools in China, utilizing a stabilizing device of cloth, but the effectiveness of this method is not as consistent as Japanese throwing methods.
There currently does not exist a martial art, in China, that has perfected a no spin throwing technique.
China has techniques for throwing chopsticks, for very short distances, though the gripping method is nothing like Japanese no spin throwing.

-3-
The technique of No-spin was published for the first time in Europe and America in the year 2002 in a book written by Mr. Ralph Thorn.
Though there were attempts at creating a no spin technique prior to Mr. Thorn he was the first to succeed in creating a complete system of throwing that did not fail.

-4-
In Japan shurikenjutsu refers to the technique of no spin throwing generally.
Hira shuriken, the polygon shuriken associated with ninja, are normally not referred to with the term "shurikenjutsu".
In addition, half-spin throwing is also not thought of highly, due to it's lack of effectiveness in combat.
The reason is because it is not effective in a real fight to hold the point of the blade in your hand.
In addition, Half-spin is easy for the person whom was an expert of No-spin throw.

-5-
Therefore many Japanese call throwing Bo-shuriken or knives by No-spin as "ShurikenJutsu"
Hira shuriken were used by ninja.
Bo shuriken were used by samurai In other words Bo-shuriken is not part of Ninjutsu.
The theory is bo shuriken came about from adaptations of designs of japanese spear and knife, on a smaller scale.

-6-
The reason why no spin throwing is valuable in combat is because the shuriken will stip between 70 degrees and 130 degrees.
This is One quarter of a spin.
It is advantageous in that we can stab it by No-spin throwing even if distance changes.
This advantage is important in a real fight.

-7-
The half spin throw has a much low success rate in a real fight.
The throw in which the shuriken rotates many times is not shurikenjutsu.
This involves no skill and will hit only 1/4 of the time, by chance.
This is not useful in a real fight.
This type of throw is only reserved for hira shuriken, which have many points.

-8-
After realizing the value of shurikenjutsu and understanding the use of the blade in combat, some people sought to better the blade for use in no spin throw by changing geomtery and other aspects of the tool.
These people were the Negishi-ryu.
The prototype Shuriken-system was made in age 1764-1780 of Tokugawa period by Mr.Kadono of Sendai-han
However there were techniques to throw Japanese knife and a sword before it.

-9-
There is the following name of a main Shuriken school.
___Old school names
with Japanese Kanji___

願立流
上遠野流
根岸流
香取神道流
円明流
毛利流
正雪流
真陰流
大東流

There were about 50 kinds Shuriken-Jutsu before.
However, there is much shuriken-jutsu which only a name and an anecdote stay in the present age.

-10-
Shooting range field of shuriken by No-spin of old age is about 40 feet from 8 feet.
24 feet from 20 feet as the distance that Japanse long spear does not reach this distance this should be where a beginner practices.

-11-
By the way,
in Japan, we use the term "Shuriken bowed" to describe a Bo-shuriken which spins and does not stick.
This is usually thrown by a amateur or beginner.

Therefore I use "Bo(bar/rod/stick)"and "Bow" as a poor joke.

Then I would call this poorly thrown Bo-shuriken as
"Turning-Bow" or
"Bowing Korean bar"
or "Bow-wow Chosun bar"

"Kuru kuru Chosen Bow"くるくる朝鮮棒
is finny in Japan.
This joke is insanely funny.

Incidentally,"Kuru kuru" is onomatopoeia of turning state.

This makes Japanese laugh so much that our face feels like it's ripping apart.

  • watch?v=mZcAFoq94IY

I can throw many tools. Not only knives.

  • I've noticed you said that half spin has a low hit rate in combat. I made a video, and I found this true by trying to throw Shuriken by hanten daho from combat range, if your interested.

  • When I rightly say,

It is the badness of stab-probability for "a change of distance"

Incidentally, we never use Jikishin-grip in Hantendaho by any means in Japan.

Btw,If you can understand Japanese, you may enjoy my video more.

Because I pretty omit translation to English.

There are many cases including interesting story (explanation) that the part which is not translated into English.

  • That is very true, but so long as Choson Ninja is around, people will be manipulated by his lies, and he won't stop teaching false facts about Japan, and it's Shinobi.

  • But please don't believe next.

    >Poison may have been used together in that case.

There is not the fact that applied poison in Hira-shuriken. Because we injure ourselves hand by poison.

    That Idiot believed my comment.

However I wrote a mistake in this comment wittingly.

I said to all of you__

So long as You-tube has "the crook who is ignorance" like ChosonNinja,

I do not show right culture and history and information.

I tell right knowledge to only the person whom I can trust by a P-mail.

  • I understand, both weapons were used by both statures, Shinobi, and Samurai. Bo-shuriken were actually applied like Hira shuriken as either a distraction, or of course a weapon, to be thrown in the unarmed areas of an armored foe. So I hear, but yes Sensei, I unserstand. Thank you for clearing it^^. Take care,

  • Thank you.

Now contents of my account are confused very much.

Video of throwing and other Anti-ChosonNinja Videos coexist.

If there was not Idiot such as him, my account not become in such a result.

I'm sorry for the people who are interested on only Shuriken or knife throwing.

Btw, In current Japan, peolpe had better separate that a sector of bo-shuriken and Ninjutsu.

Now there are many cases rather people doing traditional Kenjutsu(like you)practice bo-shuriken together in Japan.
