Johann Sebastian Bach
Partita No. 3 for Unaccompanied Violin
I. Preludio

Eugène Ysaÿe
Sonata No. 2 for solo violin, "Jacques Thibaud"
I. Prelude. Obsession

SPEECH TRANSCRIPT
[The opening of the speech was not recorded, so here's a paraphrase:]
Hello everyone, welcome to the second half of my recital! I will now play two pieces on violin, because, well... I can play violin. Anyway, from 1703 to 1720, Bach wrote a set of six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin. I will play the prelude from the 3rd partita. [End paraphrase, begin video] I will follow this with the first movement[?] of Ysaÿe's Second Sonata, which is titled "Obsession," which is French for obsession! Anyways, you will find this appropriately titled, because the piece seems to have an "obsession" with the Bach prelude and also, the Dies Irae [classical pronunciation] plainchant [Plays Dies Irae on piano...], which might be familiar to you, because it is all over the movie industry, or [it might remind you of] death, because it comes from the Latin mass for the dead. So, are there any questions?

AUDIENCE MEMBER (Paulo Bautista): You say you play violin because you can play violin. If you could play harmonica, would you have prepared a harmonica piece?
JAMES: [beat] No. :) Any other questions? OK. Bach first, then Ysaÿe.
[After piece]
And now, I'm back to the piano.

  • @lexarsepa Thanks! Do you play both violin and piano as well?

In what way is the Preludio a palindrome? I know that themes are repeated, but I didn't think that it was a palindrome. Do explain.

  • @lexarsepa Thanks a bunch! I figured people needed to know more about Griffes, so I tried to roll some out for them. I'd very much like to see your Ysaye transcription!!

I do not know about the Reger Sonatas. Do tell!

  • incredible, quite the violinist you are
