  • Why blow the horn past the crossing? Because of lawyers and idiots who run crossings at the last minute (You don't see them under the nose - blindspot). Also, specifically Company Rules that you blow through the crossing not to it. I've already lost count how many people I've had die under my wheels at crossings. This video was almost 25 years ago before quiet zones came into being. Also, see below regarding Road Foreman comments on whistle blowing. Thats the way it used to be

  • Yeah, thats one of the main reasons I posted this section of the video....due to the sprawl which has developed. I have the the line all the way to Tampa and may post more of it as time allows. Yes, much has changed.

  • Sounds like Rustyl running

  • Yeah..Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, up until recently, thats how it was REQUIRED, anything less and you were brought up on charges. I suppose the NIMBY's and a good FILA lawyer changed all that. To quote the road foreman specifically regarding Company Policy, (1986) he said "He'd rather you send them home with an earache than in a bodybag. Anything else and you WILL be pulled from service. Be governed accordingly." Quote un Quote.

  • What a sweet sounding K5La horn! I certainly miss those days. I remember the F40s and the SDP40fs (which ran on the Florida trains til 1982), even got a cab ride in one. To me, the Genesis locomotives and Amfleet "amcans" are so plain and uninteresting. The EMD cowls and the Budd Heritage cars were beautiful sights on SCL's "A-Line".

  • @five0fan As a musician who owns an operating air raid siren (now tornado siren), I like horns. Just being considerate of those who live nearby. Horns are not needed when there are (o)T(o) and especially gates.

  • @robertgift Besides the obvious reasons, just enjoy the horn and don't question.

  • Great video. Thanks for posting. With regards to quiet zones, though. they first began appearing in the late 70's and very early 80's.

  • ive run threw this section a bunch it looks nothing like this today much more clutter and chaotic

  • Why blowing horn PAST the crossing?

Strange, improper grade crossing warning sequences.

Still, good warning before the crossing.

    Love the manual horn valves.

If no traffic, I made the horn much quieter by not opening the valve all the way.

  • My friend loves those F40's. I almost caught the ones on the CSX business train but I missed him by 10 minutes.

  • That engineer is my hero. Running the train the right way. Love how he applies the brakes and just bails right off! CLASSIC
