I Only Want to Be With You
written by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde
performed by Dusty Springfield
taped for BBC1's Top of the Pops, airing 1 February 1964
Released in November 1963, this was Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien's break-out solo single. Mary, having changed her name to Dusty Springfield, had a wonderful career as a member of the folk trio The Springfields. This was recorded, 17 October 1963, while still a member of that group.
This is a live or alternate vocal performance with the studio backing track heard on the commercial release. This was a common practice for television programs in those days. There is conflicting reports, but I think this segment was taped for the very first Top of The Pops program. However, I have heard the earlist known surviving footage dates from a cople weeks later (26 February).
Any help in positively identifying where this footage was first seen would be appreciated.

What I absolutely admire about Dusty is the fact that she knew how to create the absolute best version of herself. She developed her unique soulful singing style by mimicking others (in her own words). She wasn't particularly beautiful by nature yet she managed to rock a style that made her a real knock-out. The results were astonishing and have been unmatched since. What an inspiration and what a lady!
