Mary Crotty Daughter of the late Ray Crotty explains her views on the Lisbon Treaty
Raymond Crotty
A referendum was held on 26th May 1987 to amend the Constitution so as to make it compatible with the Single European Act (SEA). The SEA had been found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court following reference to the Court by Raymond Crotty. 324,977 people voted in the referendum against amending the Constitution a
further 1,337,977 chose not to vote and only 755,425 voted for the amendment.
Raymond Crotty was committed to understanding the world around him but more specifically to understanding how it was that the dysfunctional nature ofthe Irish economy was never addressed by the Irish political class.
After spending several years as a farmer in Kilkenny, Crotty decided he needed to return to formal education in order to get a better understanding of how economics and agriculture interact. In the late 1960s he sold his farm to the Land Commission on the basses that the land would transfer to the most capable young farmers in the area and not just to the wealthiest.
He secured his primary degree by correspondence, while managing his farm and his family of seven. This was followed by an Msc from the London School of Economics.
With the unique combination of several years of practical experience as a farmer and his academic training, Crotty decided to pursue a career in academia. He spent five years lecturing at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth. This was followed by work as an agricultural economist with the British government in Malaysia, the UN in Rome and the World Bank in Washington and South America. At all times, as he worked in several developing countries across the globe, Crotty attempted to get a better understanding of why it was that some countries failed to develop.
The last ten years of his life saw him return to Ireland where he worked at Trinity College and played an active role in politics - outside of the established parties. As Crotty saw it, it was the dominance of these parties since Irelands independence that had trapped the country in a
dismal semi-permanent situation best described as 20-30-50; that is 20 percent unemployment, 30 percent living below the poverty line and, a long-term emigration rate of 50 percent. Crotty died before the celtic tiger began to roar in the mid-nineties and so it is impossible to know what he would have made of it but sadly he would probably not have been surprised by its lack of sustainability and
the corrupt machinations behind it.

Last year the Irish people decisively rejected the Lisbon Enabling Act, striking a blow to the expansionist appetites of the Lisbon plotters. This has not deterred these conspirators & their Dublin confederates from their devious schemes. Through a gruesome abuse of democracy, the Lisbon plotters are again attempting to terrorise the people into capitulating before the EU oligarchs. This time, however, the tolerance for these caliguilan looters & their crafty chicanery is thread-bare.
