this is sad cuz she hated Whitney in the movie & then Whitney came and sang her song better than she could. Lol... damn shame.

I think it has nothing to do with a soprano or an alto. Rachel was just jealous of her sister (Whitney), because Whitney had everything Rachel just dreamt of (fame, money, Kevin) and this scene shows her getting a bit angry at Whitney for not letting Rachel sing by herself and show that she is a very good singer as well. Of course Whitney was not aware of her sisters feelings.
