Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry and former Governor, and current University of Oklahoma President, David Boren support the March 4 vote to improve Oklahoma City's Ford Center, the Citizens for a Big League City campaign announced today.
Also joining the list are former Governors Frank Keating and George Nigh, and incoming Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis. Representing nearly 20 years of Oklahoma City leadership, Mayors Mick Cornett, Kirk Humphreys and Ron Norick also encourage a YES vote on Tuesday.
"Oklahoma City voters have an opportunity Tuesday, March 4, to take a bold and visionary step seizing on the momentum of our capital city," said Governor Henry. "This city and state are more than ready for such a prospect."
"The impact of these improvements extends well beyond the chance of seeing your favorite basketball stars up close and personal," Henry added. "Joining the ranks of only 28 other American cities with an NBA team sends a clear and powerful message to the nation. It elevates Oklahoma City to a rarified status of cities boasting an aura of energy and style."
"The 21st century vision for Oklahoma City, which started with MAPS has created tremendous momentum. A yes vote on Tuesday will further power that momentum and take Oklahoma City to the next level," said Governor Keating. "Becoming a big league city will change our image and do wonders for our state's ability to sell itself in the hunt for jobs."
"Oklahoma City is doing things right," said Governor Nigh. "Developing the tourism economy is so important, and improving the Ford Center will just continue to make Oklahoma City a world class destination -- bringing in more conventions, visitors and new businesses, which means more jobs and dollars all across the Metro."
"The support we've gotten from Oklahoma leadership is incredible," said Mayor Cornett, chairman of the Citizens for a Big League City Campaign. "Investing in the Ford Center and becoming an NBA city would give us a great competitive advantage for recruiting businesses and tourism, which is something that reaches beyond the Oklahoma City limits."
