It's Elton John with Hookfoot! Mr. Bloe was a group of musicians around the Dick James Music company in the late 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Dick James was of course the music publisher for the Beatles. The group "Mr. Bloe" had also gone by the name Hookfoot, and played together with a new singer-songwriter at Dick James called Elton John. They played on several of Elton John's early recordings.

In 1970 the group Mr. Bloe had a successful single (without the help of Mr. John) called "Grooving with Mr. Bloe". So in 1971 Dick James attempted to follow up that success with a follow-up single: "71-75 New Oxford Street". Here we have the B-side to that single. Both songs were written by Elton John and feature heavily his piano and organ playing. Although this single was released in 1971 it was probably something that had sat in the cans at Dick James Music for a while, and probably dates a year or two earlier. But that isn't known for sure. What is known is that it's a wonderful recording of some of Elton John's early piano and organ playing!

  • I find it somewhat insulting that Elton John can refer to an amazing band in a throw away comment like 'my friends otherwise known as hookfoot' when referring to such an incredible band that never got the recognition that they so rightly deserved. I have a number of thier original recordings still in pristine condition that give me the same pleasure now that they did when I got them 30 years ago. Am I a lone voice in this or does anyone else feel the same???

  • Sorry if you misunderstood my comments regarding the wonderful group Hookfoot! :o) These great musicians worked together under the name "Hookfoot" and for a time attempted a project under the name "Mr. Bloe". They were friends of Reg Dwight (Elton John), especially guitarist Caleb Quaye. He sometimes played on their recordings and they played on his. All in all, really great music from those days! I'm glad to know someone else appreciates their talent and great sound!

  • just like to say that i was a big fan of hookfoot they were a great band and i agree that they never got the recognition that they deserved i would love to know what become of the members of the band,

  • Its great that Hookfoot still have some fans out there. We are going to try to get them the recognition they should have had!! Dick James was deliberately holding them back (he was more of a sheet music man and wasn't in touch with what was really happening in music). Hookfoot were known as the musicians' musicians. They all still stay in touch and have had a reunion twice in the last ten years - not to play - just to talk. Lets watch this space!! New CD coming soon and will upload a song.

  • I too feel that Hookfoot shouldve got more acclaim, they were superb. Local to me too, I knew some of them very well

  • Hi RonnieFriend - thanks for responding & maybe I did misunderstand your comments - like you it's great to know that there are still folks out there that remember these guys. I introduced my younger (much!!) brother to them and he loves them too - he couldn't get over the condition of my albums some of which are older than his 36 years. Great music never really goes away!!! Take Care
