Seems to me it's more about a relationship where the guy thinks his girlfriend as "vulnerable" and likely to be harassed by men wanting her, only to find out that she's not a prey, she's as much a player as the people he fears.

Doesn't sound like a relationship song to me. Sounds like a familiar song about going through real struggles with people who are close to you and realizing, too late, that they'd succumbed to some dangerous temptations while trying to dig themselves out of the hole their life is in. And the guilt of feeling like you could have done something if you had been paying enough attention.
