@derals869 You are correct, they did call themselves that then, since Republicans were for individual liberty as proscribed in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. But the Democrats changed to calling themselves Liberal because they had given Conservative a bad reputation just as they now call themselves Progressives since they have now also given Liberal the same bad reputation. So all things considered no matter what label they place upon themselves they are still the same.

i respect what you have to say. Your point about George Wallace, Bull Connor, The KKK etc.... being all Democrats is correct but all of these people and organizations WERE CONSERVATIVE, NOT LIBERAL.

The white abolitionists were "The liberals" of their day and they were Republican. The Democrats, who supported slavery and created Jim Crow, were conservatives back then not the liberals they are now.

I usually respect what you have to say, even if I don't a agree. but to be fair I need to point out a hypocritical I see here. You can't condemn people for bringing up things the klan did in generations past, then talk about the things democratic Klansman did. Comparing Hitler to democrats (or Republicans) is trivializing the horrendous events of the Holocaust.
