@WRH90059 If you want to get techincal then they did not. The United States of America has we have come to know it was created in 1776. Prior to that the area was just a british colony. This what is redundant about Paul Revere riding on his horse shout "The British are coming. The Biriths are coming". Everyone would have been british.
