I don't think the allies had really made any pushes at all by this point, it's just that the airbornes landed pretty much everywhere, so there was mass confusion.
Perhaps conflicting reports had been made to the Germans that the airborne weren't a threat, perhaps they hadn't been told at all, but i really can't imagine they hadn't been told at all.
It is really wierd that the Germans hadn't set up defence positions around the guns.

Hey I know that's an old comment but I will reply
Germans didn't know these soldiers was behind their lines. They are Airborne they were paradropped behind German lines secretly and fight from behind.
The German artillery is shooting at the beaches of Normandy, they are far back behind front line, and didn't expect to be attacked from there.
This is why Airborne are so effective they get in secretly inside enemy territory and use the best method of attack.

Seems the Germans had no idea they could be attacked from the rear -where they not aware at this point how far the allies had pushed infantry?
