@FudgeYouVideos The second movie has nothing to do with the first. Ignore it, the creator of Donnie Darko didn't make it and thinks it's rubbish. Yes, Frank can travel through time because he died. Go to the official website and play the little game, you'll find pages from The Philosophy Of Time Travel that make it make sense.

@olin3434 That's not what Frank is. If you read The Philosophy Of Time Travel in the DVD extras or on the official website it says that people who die in the Tangent Universe can contact The Living Receiver (Donnie) through time. So it actually is Frank.

FRANK the mysterious portal weaving creature is a different character than Frank, the boy who was shot in the eye. It just happens that FRANK took the shape of Frank to appear to Donnie as something he would later recognize at the climax of the rift between universes. The part of the movie between Frank taking Donnie out of bed at the beginning (avoiding the engine) and Donnie deciding to die at the end - never happened. It was an alternate universe meant to give Donnie the ultimate choice.

@FudgeYouVideos Frank and Gretchen are manipulated dead (they died within the tangent universe, which is the setting of the movie except for the very end). Manipulated dead have the ability to travel. The tangent universe is an endless loop and resets each time Donnie fails to send the artifact (the engine) back to the primary universe. That is why future (dead) Frank is able to communicate with Donnie, because he has already died in a previous failed attempt in a past tangent universe.

@minimintrox2007 Not only the girl, his mom died because he burned down the pedos house and the whacko was spearheading his defense, so she had to go to LA. Frank got shot because he ran over Gretchen. The pedo does die though, after Donnie sets everything straight, so that's good.
