Oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. Originally constructed by the Spanish between 1672 - 1695 with major modifications between 1738 - 1756. Later, the British, Spanish and Americans all made changes to the Castillo before it was finally retired as an active fortification in 1900. Proclaimed a national monument in 1924, the Castillo is now a prominent tourist destination where people of all cultures step back in time and reflect on the forces and events which have shaped world history.
Directions: From I-95: Take exit for Downtown (Rte. 16). Follow Rte. 16 to U.S. 1 and go right on U.S. 1 for 2 mi. to Castillo Dr. Go left on Castillo to light. Go right at light. Castillo nd parking on left. From A1A: Located on A1A in downtown St. Augustine

    takes forever.

    but the difference is that if an enemy was attacking, the Spanish would bring all the city civilians into the Castillo for safety.

    When the British occupied it they would house the soldiers and not protect civilians.

    I'm a cannoneer at the Castillo de San Marcos, they don't hold the tools over their head like that anymore because now we have 3 cannons to shoot off :D. I still love watching it though. excellent video footage too.

  • jajaja, eres español y no respetas ni tu propia cultura, por desgracia, no creo que te agrade escuchar que mas 2/3 de todas las fortificaciones españolas se encuentran en las Americas, y mas de la mitad de estas en EEUU, asi que metete las palabras por donde mas te quepa y deja de estar envidiando el no poder vivir en el mejor pais del mundo, so animal.

  • es un evento celebrado todos los dias para atraer turistas, lo mismo se hace en el castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro en la Habana, Cuba, a las 9:00pm todas las noches se dispara un cañonazo para avisar a la poblacion que ya es hora de dormir. :P
