In 1907, the Lumiere brothers patented the autochrome process to create the first color photographs. This technique was used by Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud, Chief of the Photography and Cinematography Organization of the French Army, to capture the first real color photographs of the First World War (1914 - 1918).

These photographs and the works of photographers Frank Hurley and Hubert Wilkens were the inspiration for this piece. WARNING: Although much discretion was used, several images depicting the horror of war were utilized which some might find offensive.

This piece is dedicated to all the victims of all the wars. To learn more, visit: http://www.greatwar.nl/

  • I think the image at 1:04 was a composite wasn't it?

  • You are correct. The photo is by Frank Hurley and is entitled "The Battle of Zonnebeeke". It was produced by combining negatives.

  • Excellent.

I thought this video brought me closer to an event that most have forgotten, especially the autochromes.

It's good to have the past shoved in our faces once in awhile, it's what we learn from, or are supposed to.

  • Great video young man.

  • The echoing lonely piano at the end is one of the most heartbreaking things to hear.

  • WOW congrats awesome vid very touching,....

  • well done!

  • whats nerve deafness?

  • @SRP003 true. as a brit its frustrating to see how the americans can turn this world around for the better, but seem to go about it the wrong way :( suppose its critisicm but i cant lie, i like them as a country and am thankful for their allied stance with us, but the two countries have had better days in terms of world opinion.

it wouldnt hurt the two to take a leaf out of this particular conflict to realise how hatred and differences can devastate a whole region in the planet. :(

  • @dawgnpony

YES. one troubling thing, i've noticed lately that younger people tend to ignore anything that happened before they were born. they just don't care or realize how important the past is to the present.

thank you for the info on color photos. i was wondering before your video exactly when color photography became possible, and you cleared that up for me.

  • What's sad is THIS is just a piece of war. Unfortunately, blatant U.S propaganda (and some other countries) convinces countless people that war is all about heroics and patriotism, which is utter bullshit. There's also idiots in my school who think you can get a nuke in the army just because they saw it in MW2. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people can be to this shit.

  • This is true and why there will never be a draft in America again. We have begun to use Merc forces like the former Blackwater, who are now buying their own war ships and aircraft. Most of the soldiers are trained by the merc forces not traditional armies and the causality numbers are not reported. It is also cheaper than maintaining a standing army and a merc force has no allegiance to a population just the paymaster. This bodes ominously for the USA

  • Great production, effective message. Thanks.

  • But, we are in a war.
