You don't want to cycle batteries if at all possible. Our solar AC's will run with a power supply when the sun power has waned- but that being said --This unit draws around 30 amps at 12 volts which means a 100 amp hour battery will run the unit for approximately 1.5 hours before the low voltage protection cut the unit off.

What's the maximum run (in feet) between the panels and the AC unit?
-
very interesting! I could not get my four 50 amp batteries to keep up with my 450 watt ac it would only run it for about and hour or so. All of my panels could not keep up in the extreme heat they would not even put much out in the 110 degree heat we were having last summer. Glad to see yours keeping up. I need a smaller wattage unit like yours I guess. And some different kind of panels that dont mind the heat.

i got a good project for you. ive always wanted to see if its possible to could rig up an automobile ac system in my room. how would that be possible. because it runs off the 12 volts of your car and an alternator yet it would cool a room off well. I work at an auto parts store so i could get all the parts, the compresser etc but how do you hook it up and rig a homemade system. make a windmill to spin the alternator and thats taken care of but its the other tricky stuff ?_?

Excellent. Do you have a smaller 5,000 btu version & without the solar panels? Also does this AC work as a traditional unit which also dehumidifies they humidity? (Ideal). Finally I require my AC compressor to kick in at a low temperature say as little as 53 degrees (most pre 2001 Samsung models can achieve this) unlike 62 for most on the market. I hope your increased efficiency isn't at the expense of performance.

can you send me some plans
I'm really interested
Love the A/c unit
Want to make one for the cottage
No hydro

Wouldn't it be more efficient if you could get the air conditioner to run on 12-24V direct current using a modified compressor?
-
What a great project! Good job getting it working; bet that was the best AC you'd ever felt.
-
Ahh, OK. So you're using a permanent magnet, brushless DC motor in the compressor (and assumingly the fan motors too) and likely "soft-start" technology. I've theorized that would make for very efficient operations, but I hadn't experimented to back it. Air conditioning is the biggest challenge for the off-grid folks. (which I'm working on becoming myself) It's nice to see the focus is on efficiency instead of how cheaply an air conditioner can be built as we've done in the past.

@jeelveel ---I LOVE BIG PROJECTS.

If the reported BTUs and wattages are accurate, you're saying you're getting an EER of over 32? That would be incredible but seems terribly optimistic. Can you confirm?

@rreidnauer Congratulations- Your the first to ask this! 10K BTU is a mathematically calculated BTU output but not certified by an ASHRA facility- Time and Money! The secret to the performance is 3 phase DC- No start up loads and it runs at 320 watts. Do some deep research and you'll find the major AC players are going in this direction. Higher Efficiency than DC Inverter. Feel free to contact me any time.

How do You get a power Inverter to run a 5000 BTU Air conditioner I want Air conditioning for My Truck I bought a 2000 watt continues 5000 watt surge power Inverter It will Not start the compressor. I thought about a 8000 watt step up transformer connect five 12 volt batteries 60 volts then use a mechanical relay switch at 60 times per second. Generators are good for Winter connect catalytic converter to exhaust & heat house & run steam Engine, generator becomes twice efficient.

@ortafunk 4.6 amps at 115VAC = 529 watts running Start up 2 1/2 to 4 times running-- so I really don't know why your having trouble . Check your DC ground and use some big cable. Good Luck

Hi Sir, for what you invest so much Money and Time to build something what is not Working out???
To invest thousands of Dollars for Material and Installation to save maybe a quarter (25 cent a Day) for only 1.5 Hours Solar running AC times? I think it is not a smart Idea. If the finish instals System is only $2.500 Investment, and you save a quarter (25 US Cent) a Day. This means 10.000 Days, over 27 Years to have your investment back.Plus all 5 years new Battery's etc. You destroy Money

@ledmission I agree we all do some things that aren't economically smart! Got a boat, married have kids- you know what I mean! My goal isn't purely financially motivated nor do I wait for the electric bill to see my savings. Sustainability and an ecologically friendly life are important to me. ++ Plus I feel good having a free hot shower at the end of the day, grabbing a free cold drink and sitting in front of my free air conditioner. Of course we all know that nothing is free in this world.
