No. I think you might be using the regular lasso tool. The regular lasso tool doesn't work like the polygonal lasso tool. Right click it and there should be other lassoes to choose from.

Click on the layer, then above there is a little box that says "Normal" Click on it and there is a big selection of shit to change the layer mode to.

Well, I'm not sure if all laptops have it, but all I have to do is click control twice. It has something to do with google, but I'm really not sure what it is myself =/
