Is there any risk of small glass fragments falling back into the bottle, or does the neck tend to break cleanly every time?
Thanks for making the video!

@aholsgrove Another video suggested you let some of the champagne pour out instantly after the sabering ( which it kind of did in this vid too ) of the bottle as well as hold the glass up to a light to check for shards before you drink it.

I saw some videos where people attempted this and the bottle broke. What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Historically, it comes from Napoleon's troops I believe, only having bayonets or swords to lop the top off of a bottle of champagne. The string on the cage is a nice idea. Some people remove the cage beforehand, that is a mistake. There is no risk of glass fragments, not even if the break isn't that clean, as the gases and champagne that pour out remove all glass fragments.

Is there any reason to saber a bottle of champagne -- other than pretension and the theatrical element, that is?

I wouldn't call it pretension, but yes it is the theatrical element coupled with the fact that it is just plain fun...and cool!
Historically there may have been other reasons, but not anymore. Port tongs on the other hand do serve a functional purpose for some old wines.

FYI: Make sure that the sparkling wine your practicing or demonstrating on in Methode Traditionale otherwise they're is a good chance the bottle will explode as you may have seen in a few videos. They're are different ways that Sparkling wine is made and its important that you look for this.

True, but more important than the method is the final pressure in the bottle. If you have a sparkling wine with less pounds per square inch than Champagne it will not have enough pressure to help pop the top off. This can include frizzante wines such as most Prosecco, Lambrusco and the like.
