Moscow officially recognised the breakaway province of Abkhazia as an independent state last year, but its people are divided.

Many Abkhazians, a mix of ethnic Georgians and Russians, still want to be governed by Georgia. But physical as well as bureaucratic walls are being built to keep them apart.

Matthew Collin reports from the border region of Gali.

  • Agreed. It's ridiculous that .001% of the world's population gets so much attention.

  • The world is not centered around Israel and Palestine. I am tired of reading comments about this issue on every single news bulletin.

  • @AlexeyFromRussia do u live in dream? because in 90s it was Georgian population that was ethnically cleansed and anexed not Abkhazian or Osetian. Georgians made up 80 percent of abkhazia and South Osetia who were throughn out of their homes tortured and killed. read history before u play smart ass

  • @thegreendestiny they cant because there are about 500 000 refugees who were driven out of their homes who once made more than 80 percent of the entire population. they got ethnicly cleansed murdered and driven out. They have right and want to return back home

  • It's simple solution, Abkhaz to stay in Abkhazia, Georgians in Georgia. Why can't they just do that.

  • Poor Georgians :( When I see such kind of videos, I want cry...

They want to enslave Georgians in their own land...

    Fuck Russian pigs!

  • shut the hell up with the genocide, there were no more than 100 people (real civilians, not adidas sporting thugs with AKs) died in the cross fire between Georgian army and Russian army, more than 200 georgian civilians died outside the Tskhinvali region, so according to your logic russians commited genocide...genocide is what your country did in abkhazia in 1993-ethnic cleansing, this is why serbia got bombed, now its your county's turn to get the pounding and vacuum bombs in center of Moscow

  • also difference of those two wars - neither germany nor brittain nor the US has given out their passports to the kosovars...you breached the law wae before the war, your country has done everything for this war to happen, both in 1992 and in 2008, russia doesn't want or need peace in Caucasus, russia wants war and destruction, russia killed 250,000 chechens - a REAL genocide there, russia helped in killing of Prigorodni region Ingush people with the hand of ossetians, russia murdered Ubikhs

  • check your facts, and stop repeating the RTR and Pervii kanal propoganda, please, i lived there, you didnt ive seen things your TV wont tell you, you can lie to whoever even to yourself, but i know the truth....your govt is saying that every day - WE NEED GEORGIA..abkhaz are just being used and will be abused in the end, you dong give a fuck about abkhaz or ossetians, you need georgia, and you wont get it

  • There is another well known fact. As a result of those wars in early 90s nearly each family in those regions have weapons for self perotection. Those people live with fear that at any day Georgia will atack them and they have lived with this fear since early 90s. Those people want piece, but after the genocide carried out by Georgian side they will fight to become free from Georgia. They hate Georgian government (not Georgian people) and they say "thank you" to Russia.

  • The Georgia Problem is prety old. In early 90s there were genocide acts against Abhasia and South Osetia people carried by Georgian government. Those wars lasted for more than a year and they anded up with Russia bringing its piecekeepers into those regions. The results of those conflicts were prety bad. Each family in South Osetia and Abhazia had lost their realitives.People feared that something similar will happen in future and they started fighting for freedom(without blood. only legal ways)

  • Think this way. Try to remember what happened to Yugoslavia. War, vacume bonb was droped on its capital. What was the reason for that war? Yugoslavia wanted to sort out its own problems by itself, without any nato troops. USA didn't like this and war happened.

Now Georgia and Serbia. Both countries lost their land because of same reason. USA brought NATO troops there, but Russia brought Russian army to Georgia.
