I shot and edited this piece for the good folks over at igiveashirt.org/ and rethinkmonthly.com

Tech notes: I'm still getting used to shooting DSS. I really wish there was an audio input meter on the 7D. I get extremely clean audio to the Zoom, but down the chain, it's a guessing a game and often gets distorted when it goes to the camera. I use the audio from the camera as a reference/replace to line up the tracks from the Zoom, but occasionally, it's nice to have a backup for when I forget to hit record on the Zoom (facepalm)

We shot this in a huge 1000+ capacity church room with all of the lights off and at night. A single high watt stage light pointing at the back of her head, and two Lowes (yay!) $10 utility lamps on the left and right, one tungsten, one florescent clipped to a $20 clothing rack. Yay for lighting on the cheap.

Audio: R0DE VideoMic - Zoom H4n - 7D

  • General mic theory still applies here; the closer you can get the better. The H4n has a couple of mics built in, they're pretty good at picking up everything, but they're best at ambient sound. Where the H4n really shines is when you can throw external mics into it. I typically either run a couple of mics into the XLR inputs and record those with the ambient mics, or my typical interview setup, a Røde VideoMic going into the H4n.

  • I don't give a shirt.

  • Love this!

  • nice sound quality... how far can the H4N pick up the sound? can it pick up the sound from more than 20 feet feet away like the RODEO video mic can do?

  • Thats a great camera! Funny I was just on the casio sight looking to buy an EX-FH25
