I've lived in California for nearly all my life, so it's been particularly annoying that the anti-gay marriage Prop 8 passed here in 2008 and was not overturned by the California Supreme Court, despite the fact that it's clearly unconstitutional. In America, you can't vote to take away someone's rights, especially if the exercise of those rights has no detrimental effect on society (unlike smoking indoors or owning assault rifles).
While it's vital that our legal system acknowledge gays as equals, the frontline of this battle is often still between parents and their children. So I decided to revisit Ang Lee's excellent 1993 film, THE WEDDING BANQUET, the story of a lie gone awry when a gay Chinese man in living in New York arranges a sham wedding so his parents visiting from Taiwan won't know he's gay. While Lee has made many great films in his career, THE WEDDING BANQUET is still my favorite of his for its mix of humor, emotion, and compassion (and Asians!). It also has what may be one of my favorite movie endings of all time.

This is one of my favorite movies of all times! I didn't realize it was by Ang Lee. Thanks for reminding me of The Wedding Banquet. You forgot to mention not to watch this movie on an empty stomach. Way too much good food being cooked throughout.
