After receiving a federal 21st Century Grant this year, Maury River Middle School started an after-school program. The $159,000 per year grant is given to schools with a high number of economically disadvantaged students. MRMS is using the grant money to fund a program called NEXT, which is focused on increasing high school graduation rates. NEXT aims to create a successful future for the students and challenges them to think about where they will be "next." Around 60 students are enrolled in the program, which runs Monday through Thursday for two hours after school. Students from Rockbridge County High School and Washington and Lee University volunteer to help the middle school students with homework for 40 minutes each day. After the tutoring session, the middle school students participate in hands-on workshops run by either RCHS teachers or community organizers, such as YMCA trainers or Boxerwood Garden employees.
