In this 1st of a 4 part series Jack from The Survival Podcast [ http://thesurvivalpodcast.com ] takes you fishing with a minimalist kit. Jack's kit in this video consists of...

1. A small assortment of snelled hooks
2. A cheapo one dollar knife
3. A small spool of monofilament line
4. A small hank of parachute cord

In this first video Jack demonstrates how to quickly create a make shift fishing pole, insure you don't loose a fish if the rod breaks and how to turn a flower into a fishing lure.

  • I rig up line on a cane pole the same way.......tying off at a thicker portion in addition to the tip. I just don't see the need of the notch. If you tie off right behind where you cut off one of the small branches near the tip, maybe with a clove hitch, wouldn't that "bump" also keep it from slippin w/o having to worry about whether you notched it too deep? Just askin'........

  • @Scouter213 - Well sure it would keep it from slipping off the end. The issue though is will it slip front or back even a bit. I like to have the most "feel" that I can and the best chance of positive hook up I can get, specifically when jigging a flower. So it is more about hook up percentage then it falling off. It isn't a big deal, it might make a 2% difference but sometimes, like when you are hungry, 2% matters.

  • I appreciate you taking the time to do this video. Its more than I have tried to do but seriously. No offense you have everything but the rod and you picked a stick for that. You dont even need the stick, you could just hand cast by throwing the baited hook into the water. You already have line and hooks! Bait can be found anywhere. Slugs, worms, etc,

  • @groganfan - you are right it is more than you have tried to do, enough said.

  • i know russian im from moldova hey neighbour

  • @FailureVideo - Actually my family is from the Ukraine but close enough, nice to meet you.

  • finally a chunky survival expert im kinda chunky and my friends dont think i can do survival

  • @halo3cool300 - Yep some folks talk shit about a beer gut. Well I can still do seven miles with pack in the mountains with out sucking wind, so I figure some talk and others actually do. I ain't trying to get featured in a calendar or GQ. I am Ukrainian we are stocky and to my wife's dismay hairy people. People can take me the way I am and learn what I know or not look at me, I suggest you develop the same attitude.

  • best intro.on the net.

  • I can see that. Still............great stuff. And I watched all 4. Trotlining, jug fishing, and bush hooks Is how I did most of my fishing as a teenager. Thanks for the recall of memories.

  • Great stuff...thanks for sharing ;) c

  • that pole breaking thing is really smart, never thought of it. p.s. i'm suprised you did this and didn't get introuble at a public park

  • I would stick with the chunkiest survivalist, because he would know how to find and get enough food for 1 and some to spare. People think you gotta be skinny to survive the rigors of hiking, biking, etc. What about animals with fat under their fur out in the wilderness, and ever heard of duck and goose grease? Women know chubby hubby means great provider. just sayin...
