I've transferred hundreds of tapes and never had that happen although I do check them for binding before playing then I've had to do what you suggest. Second, really old VCRs used an actual 'lamp' with a sensor to see the end of the tape and shut down rewind, fast forward and play when at the end of the tape. Those lamps would burn out and then rip the tapes off the hubs.
To the guy that asked about "should you push stop first so it fast forward"- yes, don't run it over the 'play' head!

WOW, the ONLY guy i've ever run into that talks about tightening the tape up. Good job, I think i'm the only person I know that puts his thumb in the spindle hole and tightens it up before I put it in the vcr. I plan on transferring some tapes this summer.

when you fast forward it should you push stop first so it fast forwards it super fast or just fast forward it normally with the video being shown?
