Isn't she dancing for her step father? Isn't that just a tad bit creepy to anyone?

Awkward, yes...and it is very stylized. Really, it reminds me of a scene from old school Star Trek.

In the beginning that guy plays the harp like it's a bass.

Who's the fat-arse in the toga? Is it a man or a woman?

I do not agree. Usually erotics in our time is identified with nakedness. But this is primitive. In this version the subtle erotic lies in being more covered than open. I must say - I like this version more than others, because it is not what is expected or - maybe desired. So intelligent.

....the awkward, nonsensical dancing can never ever equal the musical score.....

As much as it pains me to do so, I am afraid I have to agree with some of the more negative comments made about the dance. While there are some interesting ideas, it really seems more awkward than seductive. It's a shame but I guess even the greatest productions can have a weaker moment. Please keep in mind though that I absolutely love this production and the rest of it is flawless in every sense. This isn't bad of course, just not quite up to the rest of it. Stratas/Bohm+ Salome= perfection

Teresa Stratas IS Salomé. She is the crazyest, most beautiful Salomé I've seen. Great actress. Maybe her voice would not carry through in a stage production, but in this dvd production she's fabulous.
