The motion: "It's time to end affirmative action"
Moderator: Robert Siegel
Speaking for the motion: John H. McWhorter, Terence J. Pell and Joseph C. Phillips
Speaking against the motion: Khin Mai Aung, Kimberlé Crenshaw and Tim Wise
IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.
Also, he assumes a GREAT deal and puts much stock in, i might add, the idea that most blacks drop the science classes because it's too challenging. God forbid they want to go a different direction in their lives or that they decide they won't be able to do what they had planned due to unforeseen circumstances...

My problem with this guy is his argument focuses too heavily on 1 subject. He found some "alarming" numbers in the area of science and ran with it. He made many other interesting points but he gets a 5 out of 10 for effort. He just didn't deliver. Tim wise is the only person who has really made sense so far. Not because he's saying things that I want to hear (things I've studied to be true on my own time actually) but because it was most relevant, than even other supporters of AA.

if affirmative action were to be removed and society took a step back, then we'd have to realize that affirmative action wasnt the issue and that theres a larger issue that must be taken into account. we shouldnt "need" affirmative action in order to provide equal opportunities. I also agree with the fact that elite schools shouldnt accept students with much lower credentials just to promote diversity. this just gives minorities a reason to say "well a c average is ok, ill still get into school"

pell's speech has merit, but it seems to me that affirmative action needs to be adjusted and upgraded.
i think there will be a time when aa is removed, but at this time, it would be
a move backwards for society.

@troyceo i completely agree, i find these talks similar to AA stories, even though everybody says they dont judge & wants to do better they'll all brag about who had it worst. Some peoples experiences might be a little bit worst some might be alittle bit better but if you got it bad, you got it bad. All this is, is a distraction from like you said to devert attention from those who are actually doing the stealing of resources

@benympls Tim Wise gave the best discourse. It is the elite so-called "whites" that got the working class and the so-called blacks tricked into thinking it's a problem amongst them, when in fact it is their deception to keep themselves rich at both of our expenses. Both races need to wake up to the deception and get rid of EVERYBODY that is in politics right now. We need to clean house and start over. That is the only way true change is gonna come for the working class.
